Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Datuk Seri Dr Shahidan Kasim said the government spent nearly RM103 million from 2008 to 2013 for advertisements and publicity material for 13 departments and agencies under the PMD.
Last week, The Malay Mail Online reported that Putrajaya doled out over RM500 million in the first six months of the year on advertising, with the PMD accounting for the lion’s share at RM264 million.
According to Vizeum Media in its report, the increased expenditure by government departments had been due to the general election in May.
Previously, AC Nielsen reported that the department had forked out RM170 million in the first quarter of 2013 for the same purpose.
In his July 10 reply, Shahidan also said provided a breakdown of the advertising expenditure as RM8.3 million on advertising and publicity for the 13 departments and agencies under the PMD, RM82.4 million for the Iskandar Regional Development Authority (IRDA), and RM12.1 million on Unit Peneraju Agenda Bumiputra (Teraju).
According to its July report, Vizeum noted that the federal government spent RM531 million on advertising in the first six months of this year, or 160 per cent more than it did in 2012.
It further revealed that the RM264 million bill was enough the make the PM’s Department the country’s second-largest single advertiser, losing out to multinational consumer goods firm Unilever Malaysia that spent RM286 million.
